Boston Permitting and Recycling Information

You’ll need a permit to park a dumpster on a city street.

A dumpster placed on a city street has certain permitting requirements:

  • You (or a representative) must show up in person at Boston City Hall to fill out the application. You can’t do it online or via mail.
  • You must obtain the permits at least 3 days in advance.
  • “No Parking” signs must be posted at least 48 hours in advance in residential areas and 24 hours in non-residential locations.
  • Fees include a base fee of $50, $1 per square foot of space used on the street, $4 for each “No Parking” sign (minimum of 2). *Fees subject to change*

Talk to your dumpster rental company about permitting requirements and whether or not you’ll need to obtain one in your situation.

Avoid permitting requirements by placing a dumpster on private property.

Getting a dumpster placed on your driveway or other private property avoids the hassle of having to obtain a permit.

Boston requires materials like glass, plastic, and paper be recycled.

A 2008 ordinance states that these materials must be recycled.

It’s really the solid waste hauler’s responsibility to ensure these items are separated from other wastes, but you should do your part and separate whenever possible.

Ask your dumpster rental provider about any recycling or separating requirements.

Contact the City of Boston Waste Reduction Division if you have additional questions regarding bulk waste removal or dumpster rules and regulations within city limits.

How much does it cost to rent a dumpster?

Usually a phone call is required to the hauler to get an exact price because the type of debris and the city you live in can change the price significantly.  Some waste removal companies listed on Hometown Dumpster Rental do publish their prices.  If so, you can find the link to their prices on their company profile.

Dumpster rental pricing can actually be a bit complicated if you've never rented one before.  One feature of temporary dumpster prices that surprises first time renters... you can actually end up paying more than you thought, depending on the weight of your dumpster.  Check out our beginner's guide to dumpster rental prices for more info.

We've also done a number of nationwide pricing surveys and comparisons that can help you understand costs in your area.
