Things to Know about Refuse Disposal Services and C&D Debris in Troy, MI

The City provides waste and refuse collection to about 30,000 residents

The City contracts refuse and waste hauling to Tringali Sanitation. It picks up trash once per week for thousands of households, apartments, condos, mobile homes, duplexes and businesses.

To learn more about Troy trash collection schedules, preparing items for pick up, and recycling contact the Department of Public Works at (248) 524-3399.

The City offers large household item pick up

Troy residents are welcome to place two bulk items per week at the curb for pick up. Certain restrictions do apply for the bulk trash pick up:

  • Hazardous waste will not be picked up curbside
  • Refrigerators and freezers doors must be removed
  • Anything exceeding 250 pounds will not be picked up
  • No debris originating from construction, building, demolition, and the repairing of structures

Many of the items that cannot be picked  up curbside with your regular trash collection, and does not qualify for the large household item pick up, can be brought to the SOCRRA Recycling & Waste Facility.

Construction dumpsters filled with construction and demolition debris aren't sorted in the State of Michigan

C&D debris is collected in roll off construction dumpsters by a private waste hauler. The State of Michigan does not take construction & demolition debris to a recycling center. The debris is disposed of the same way that household debris is by being taken to a Michigan Landfill.

More tips on renting a dumpster in Troy, MI

How long can I keep a temporary dumpster?

A 7-day rental period is often standard, although this can vary by company. Some dumpster services offer 14-day rental periods included in the price while others may charge a fee for each extra day you have the container.

Most companies allow you to keep the container longer by paying a per day or per week rental fee, which typically ranges from $5 to $10 per day (but can vary). A maximum number of days may apply. You can also have the trash bin picked up earlier than the agreed upon pick-up date by calling the company and requesting a pick-up.

Can any of my trash or debris be recycled?

Household junk or trash is taken to the landfill.  Some types of construction and demolition debris may be able to be recycled, but it depends mostly on whether recycling facilities are available in your area.  In recent years, recycling efforts have picked up significantly and so an increasing number of roll-off companies are able to offer recycling of C&D (construction and demolition) debris, asphalt roof shingles, concrete, and some other debris types.

The best way to know if your debris can be recycled is to first ask your selected disposal service. If so, you’ll need to keep recyclables in a separate dumpster. For example, concrete debris should go in one dumpster and non-recyclable mixed trash in another.
