Temporary Dumpster Rentals in Washington D.C.

DPW offers residential trash/recycling collection but not commercial services

Businesses, apartment complexes and residential buildings with four or more units must hire trash/recycling services from a private dumpster company, as the Department of Public Works does not handle commercial dumpster services.

Will I need a permit to rent a trash bin in Washington DC?

You will probably need to secure a permit if the container is to be placed in the public right-of-way, such as a city street or alleyway. The cost of these dumpster permits is $75 per month.

Check with your dumpster rental company to see if they handle permitting requirements for you or if you need to secure the permit yourself.

Washington DC recycles construction and demolition debris

The DPW in Washington D.C. does not collect construction and demolition debris as part of its bulk waste collection service. C&D debris is collected and recycled by private waste removal companies.

Most, if not all, Washington DC dumpster rental companies accept construction debris in their dumpsters and will properly recycle it.

Mandatory recycling of some debris

Recyclable materials are required to be source separated in the D.C. Metro area. This includes paper, cardboard and yard waste. These items shouldn’t be mixed in with general household trash.
