Different materials have different densities, and as a result, a full dumpster of household junk will weigh significantly less than one filled with roofing shingles or concrete.
\r\n\r\n
Below is a general guide to what you can expect based on typical weight ranges.
\r\n\r\n
\r\n
Note: The weight included in a dumpster's price is typically measured in tons. One ton is the equivalent of 2,000 lbs.
\r\n
\r\n\r\n
Trash or Household Junk
\r\n\r\n
Household junk typically includes general trash, furniture, clothes, toys, boxes, light appliances, etc. Weighing only 100-250 lbs per cubic yard, it's relatively lightweight. Even if you fill a large dumpster, you likely won’t go over the weight limit unless you're disposing of heavier items like books, old appliances, or solid wood furniture.
\r\n\r\n
Take a look at the table below to get an idea for how much a dumpster will weigh when it's full of household trash. Keep in mind, these estimates are only averages, and your household trash may weigh more or less. The included weight of each dumpster size will also vary from one company to another, so make sure you're aware of how much weight is included in the price before renting.
\r\n\r\n
\r\n\t
Average Weight of Trash in a Dumpster
\r\n\t
\r\n\t\t
\r\n\t\t\t
Dumpster Size
\r\n\t\t\t
Weight When 50% Full
\r\n\t\t\t
Weight When Full
\r\n\t\t
\r\n\t
\r\n\t
\r\n\t\t
\r\n\t\t\t
10 yard
\r\n\t\t\t
0.25-0.5 tons
\r\n\t\t\t
0.5-1 ton
\r\n\t\t
\r\n\t\t
\r\n\t\t\t
15 yard
\r\n\t\t\t
0.5-0.75 tons
\r\n\t\t\t
1-1.5 tons
\r\n\t\t
\r\n\t\t
\r\n\t\t\t
20 yard
\r\n\t\t\t
0.6-1 ton
\r\n\t\t\t
1.25-2 tons
\r\n\t\t
\r\n\t\t
\r\n\t\t\t
30 yard
\r\n\t\t\t
0.875-1.25 tons
\r\n\t\t\t
1.75-2.5 tons
\r\n\t\t
\r\n\t\t
\r\n\t\t\t
40 yard
\r\n\t\t\t
1.25-1.5+ tons
\r\n\t\t\t
2.5-3+ tons
\r\n\t\t
\r\n\t
\r\n
\r\n\r\n

\r\n\r\n
Tip: Household junk is usually the lightest type of debris, but it can still add up, especially if you're tossing heavier items like old couches or a garage full of clutter.
\r\n\r\n
Keep reading:
\r\n\r\n
\r\n\t
What Size Dumpster Do I Need to Clean Out My House?
\r\n\t
Insider's Guide to Getting Rid of Household Junk
\r\n
\r\n\r\n
Construction & Demolition Debris
\r\n\r\n
Construction and demolition debris (C&D) typically includes drywall, wood, flooring, cabinetry, plaster, concrete, siding, etc. Weighing approximately 250-1,000 lbs per cubic yard, it's one of the debris types that can add up quickly even if the dumpster isn't full. Because of this, a smaller dumpster is typically recommended, if not required, so you avoid exceeding truck hauling limits.
\r\n\r\n
In the table below, you can see how much a dumpster will weigh on average when it's full of construction or demolition debris. Remember that these are averages, and your C&D debris may weigh more or less.
\r\n\r\n
The amount of weight included in the price for each dumpster size can differ depending on the rental company, so it’s important to confirm how much weight is included before you book. Your roof may weigh more or less than these averages depending on its size, how much of the roof decking materials need to be removed, the number of layers, etc.
\r\n\r\n
Because asphalt shingles are so heavy, many rental companies restrict shingle disposal to smaller dumpster sizes to avoid overweight loads.
\r\n\r\n
\r\n\t
Average Weight of Roofing Shingles in a Dumpster
\r\n\t
\r\n\t\t
\r\n\t\t\t
Dumpster Size
\r\n\t\t\t
Weight When 50% Full
\r\n\t\t\t
Weight When Full
\r\n\t\t
\r\n\t
\r\n\t
\r\n\t\t
\r\n\t\t\t
10 yard
\r\n\t\t\t
0.75-1 ton
\r\n\t\t\t
1.5-2 tons
\r\n\t\t
\r\n\t\t
\r\n\t\t\t
15 yard
\r\n\t\t\t
1-1.5 tons
\r\n\t\t\t
2-3 tons
\r\n\t\t
\r\n\t\t
\r\n\t\t\t
20 yard
\r\n\t\t\t
1.5-2 tons
\r\n\t\t\t
3-4 tons
\r\n\t\t
\r\n\t
\r\n
\r\n\r\n

\r\n\r\n
Learn more:
\r\n\r\n
\r\n\t
Guide to Renting a Dumpster for Roofing Shingles
\r\n\t
Best Dumpster Sizes for Shingle Roof Replacements
\r\n
\r\n\r\n
\r\n
\r\n\r\nGet Free Dumpster Rental Estimates
\r\n\r\n
Request availability and pricing from dumpster
\r\nrental companies near you.
\r\nFind Dumpsters
\r\n\r\n
Is the Included Weight of My Dumpster Enough?
\r\n\r\n
Now that you have a better idea of what your debris type weighs and roughly how much you have, it's easy to determine whether or not a specific dumpster size and included weight is enough for your project.
\r\n\r\n
When finding a dumpster on Hometown, it's easy to compare dumpster costs as well as included weights and overage fees.
\r\n\r\n
As you can see above, each dumpster quote includes:
\r\n\r\n
\r\n\t
Cost to rent that dumpster size
\r\n\t
How much weight is included in the dumpster price
\r\n\t
Cost per ton if you go over the included weight
\r\n\t
How many days are included in the dumpster price
\r\n\t
Cost per day if you keep the dumpster longer than your included rental period
\r\n
\r\n\r\n
When determining which dumpster is right for you, you'll want to consider all of these factors.
\r\n\r\n
Ask yourself the following questions...
\r\n\r\n
\r\n\t
Roughly how much debris do I have? (1 cubic yard is roughly the size of a standard kitchen stove.)
\r\n\t
Roughly how much does the debris I have weigh? (See the charts above for average weights for common debris types.)
\r\n\t
Is it cheaper if I pay more upfront for a larger dumpster/higher weight limit?
\r\n\t
How much will I be paying in total if I go over the included weight for a specific dumpster?
\r\n
\r\n\r\n
If you're tossing household junk and trash, the volume of debris you have is typically enough information to know which dumpster size is right for your project. This is because household junk and trash are lightweight and very rarely exceed a dumpster's included weight. However, if you are disposing of heavy furniture, make sure you keep weight in mind as well.
\r\n\r\n
If you are disposing of heavy debris, like C&D debris or roofing shingles, however, you will want to take weight into close consideration. Here's an example...
\r\n\r\n
Let's say you have 5 cubic yards of concrete to dispose of. You'll need to consider the weight included in the dumpster price and the cost per extra ton, not just whether or not it will fit inside the dumpster. For example, let's say the company's 10 yard heavy debris dumpster—a low-boy dumpster specifically designed for carrying dense, heavy debris—includes 8 tons of weight for the price of $500. Even if you only have 5 cubic yards of concrete (average weight of 10.125 tons) and it would physically fit inside the 10 yard dumpster, the weight of that amount of concrete will exceed the included weight (8 tons), and incur an additional fee per ton ($100 per ton x 2.125 tons = $212.50 in overage fees).
\r\n\r\n
In this scenario, if you went with the 10 yard dumpster for $500 (including 8 tons of weight), you would end up paying roughly $712.50 including the overage fees. Now, let's say that same company offers a 15 yard dumpster for $550 and 9 tons of weight for the price. You would end up paying $550 base price + $112.50 for going one ton over the included weight = $662.50. In this case, choosing the larger dumpster would save you $50.
\r\n\r\n
Regardless of your situation, you should be making sure you choose the dumpster that best matches your actual debris weight, not just the cheapest upfront option.
\r\n\r\n
\r\n
Find dumpsters near you.
\r\n\r\n
Request availability and pricing from dumpster
\r\nrental companies near you.
\r\nFind Dumpsters
\r\n","teaser":"
Wondering how much a full dumpster weighs? Rental
\r\n\r\n
One of the most costly yet common mistakes that customers make when renting a dumpster is underestimating the amount of junk, garbage, or debris they have to get rid of.
\r\n\r\n
Calculating the amount of trash you have can be notoriously difficult, which is why we recommend renting a dumpster one size larger than you think you'll need if you're on the fence.
\r\n\r\n
The difference between renting a 10 yard dumpster and a 20 yard dumpster is around $100-$200 on average for twice the You’ll likely pay more for junk removal services than you would to rent a dumpster, all factors being the same (amount of debris, location, etc.).
\r\n\r\n
A rough estimate of how much you can expect to pay for a residential construction debris cleanup is $350 (small jobs) to $1,000+ (large projects).
\r\n\r\n
Of course, the same factors affecting dumpster rental prices apply to junk removal costs, including location and amount of debris.
\r\n\r\n
The complexity of the job can also affect junk removal costs.
\r\n\r\n
Many junk removal companies determine costs based on the volume of debris.
\r\n\r\n
For example, they may charge $250 for a quarter-truck load, $400 for a half-truck load, and so on.
\r\n\r\n
The best way to get an accurate price is to search for local companies on Hometown and contact them to get a free online estimate.
\r\n\r\n
For small construction or light demolition projects, junk removal service may actually be a more cost-effective option compared to renting a dumpster.
\r\n\r\n
For example, a junk removal company may charge $200 to come pick up debris from a small deck removal project, while renting a 10 yard dumpster could cost in the $300 range.
\r\n\r\n
In summary, consider using a junk removal company for small construction debris cleanups and in situations where you want the speed and convenience of using such service.
\r\n\r\n
Another situation where junk removal service makes sense is when you live in an area where dumpsters are not allowed to be placed on-site, such as in a busy downtown area or when HOA rules prohibit dumpsters.
\r\n\r\n

\r\n\r\n
Deciding Which Service Is Best
\r\n\r\n
Deciding between renting a dumpster or hiring a junk removal service for a construction project cleanup can be tricky, but the good news is that both options are the most efficient methods to get the job done.
\r\n\r\n
You really can’t go wrong!
\r\n\r\n
However, here is the case for using each option:
\r\n\r\n
Dumpster Rental
\r\n\r\n
\r\n\t
Medium to large construction projects
\r\n\t
Garage demolition
\r\n\t
Kitchen demolition
\r\n\t
Re-roofing projects. for a Garage Cleanout
\r\n\r\n
10 Yard Dumpster: Best for Small, Light Cleanouts
\r\n\r\n
A 10 yard dumpster is a great option for all types of smaller cleanups.
\r\n\r\n
A 10 yard dumpster works well for:
\r\n\r\n
\r\n\t
A small garage or one with limited clutter
\r\n\t
Bagged trash and small household items
\r\n\t
Light debris like boxes, toys, or renovation debris leftovers
\r\n\t
Minimal furniture
\r\n
\r\n\r\n
Typical capacity: 50-70 contractor bags
\r\n\r\n
Who it’s best for: Homeowners doing a quick declutter or emptying a garage that’s only partially full
\r\n\r\n
15 Yard Dumpster: Best All-Around for an Average Garage
\r\n\r\n
A 15 yard dumpster is one of the most popular picks because it handles a typical garage cleanout without being oversized.
\r\n\r\n
Great for:
\r\n\r\n
\r\n\t
Most 1-car or 2-car garage cleanouts
\r\n\t
Mixed household junk
\r\n\t
Medium furniture pieces
\r\n\t
Old lawn equipment
\r\n
\r\n\r\n
Typical capacity: 80-100 contractor bags
\r\n\r\n
Who it’s for: Anyone wanting a safe “middle ground” size
\r\n\r\n
20 Yard Dumpster: Best for Full, Packed Garages
\r\n\r\n
If your garage is wall-to-wall clutter, or you truly don’t know what’s buried in there, a 20 yard dumpster is usually the safest bet.
\r\n\r\n
Perfect for:
\r\n\r\n
\r\n\t
Full garage cleanouts
\r\n\t
Bulky items
\r\n\t
Large furniture
\r\n\t
Heavy items like old exercise equipment
\r\n
\r\n\r\n
Typical capacity: 110-130+ contractor bags
\r\n\r\n
Who it’s for: Homeowners who want to clear everything out in one load without worrying about running out of space
\r\n\r\n
How to Choose the Right Dumpster Size
\r\n\r\n
Ask yourself these questions:
\r\n\r\n
How full is your garage: partially or completely packed?
\r\n\r\n
\r\n\t
Partially full → 10–15 yard
\r\n\t
Completely packed → 20 yard
\r\n
\r\n\r\n
Do you have bulky items like furniture or equipment?
\r\n\r\n
\r\n\t
Yes → 15–20 yard
\r\n\t
No → 10 yard
\r\n
\r\n\r\n
Are you getting rid of heavy or awkward items?
\r\n\r\n
Heavy items means you may need more space than you think, so sizing up to allow for a greater weight allowance is often the smart choice.
\r\n\r\n
A 20 yard gives you breathing room, with an average weight limit of 3-5 tons (6,000-10,000 lbs).
\r\n\r\n
Do you want everything gone in one load?
\r\n\r\n
If the answer is yes, choose the next size up.
\r\n\r\n
Getting a bigger dumpster is always cheaper than booking a second one.
\r\n\r\n
\r\n
Find dumpsters for your or landfill yourself, but a dumpster is by far the easiest way to get a garage cleanout done.
\r\n\r\n
Dumpsters are great for garage cleanouts because:
\r\n\r\n
\r\n\t
No trips to the landfill
\r\n\t
Load as you go
\r\n\t
Safe disposal of bulky items
\r\n\t
Flat-rate pricing (no depending on your local city demolition laws.
\r\n\r\n
\r\n
Sheds come in various designs, so the disposal needs can vary significantly based on size and materials
