Dumpster Rental Tips

Dumpsters for Rent

Dumpster rental process: step by step

  1. Estimate what size dumpster you need - roll-off dumpster sizes are quoted in the amount of cubic yards of debris the container will hold.  Common sizes are 10 yard, 20 yard, and 30 yard.  Click on a company's logo or name to visit their profile page, where you'll find sizes and dimensions of dumpsters available to rent.
  2. Research local dumpster rental companies - Find local services that have a good reputation, offer the size you need, at a price you can afford.
  3. Contact one or more service providers - Confirm information about prices, amount of weight included in the price, rental period, and other terms of the rental.
  4. Reserve the dumpster - It's best to schedule the dumpster for delivery for the day before you plan to start loading it.

Pay attention to the included weight, or "weight allowance", of your dumpster

When you rent a dumpster, it comes with a weight allowance.  A major portion of dumpster rental pricing is the cost to dispose of the debris.  Landfills and recycling centers charge disposal services for the weight of the debris, generally anywhere from $35 per ton (2000 lbs.) to $100 per ton.  The amount of weight included in the price can range from 0 lbs. to 1 ton (2,000 lbs.) to 8 tons (16,000 lbs.) or more. The bigger the dumpster, the greater the weight allowance, generally. More info about dumpster rental sizes.

Dumpster companies generally pass the additional disposal fees on to the renter when your load goes over the included weight.  If you're price includes 2 tons of weight (4000 lbs.) and your debris weighs in at 6000 lbs. at the landfill, you'll end up paying the extra fees for the addtional weight.

Easy steps to rent a dumpster

Ensure the dumpster rental process goes smoothly using the simple steps outlined here:

1. Plan ahead – Renting a dumpster is generally not a spur of the moment thing. Determine your project’s disposal needs at least two weeks ahead of time. Call at least a week in advance to book the dumpster, or two week in advance during busy months (spring, summer and fall). That way you can rest assured knowing the dumpster will be there when you need it.

2. Get multiple quotes – Be sure you’re getting the best rate, service and container for your project by getting quotes from multiple rental providers. We recommend at least two or three.

3. Prep for drop-off – Make sure the drop off location has easy access and no obstructions, such as cars, kid’s toys, or even fences (if applicable).

4. Follow the loading guidelines – Avoid the headaches later on and: Don’t over-fill the dumpster, avoid disposing of prohibited items (e.g., hazardous wastes), don’t mix trash in with clean loads (e.g., concrete only), and follow other guidelines given to you by the dumpster rental company.

Save money and reduce waste by composting

As much as 30% of municipal waste in the U.S. is compostable, including yard debris, food scraps and paper products. The Utah DEQ encourages residents to compost.

Benefits of composting:

  • It’s free organic fertilizer and soil additive
  • Reducing waste output by up to 30% could reduce the cost of your waste hauling bill
