What happens to my trash in Sante Fe, NM?
Garbage is handled in a 3-step process:
- Santa Fe trash is not sorted in any way. Any trash placed in a curbside bin from a residence or business is taken to the Caja del Rio Landfill by city trash collectors or transfer trailers.
- The trash is immediately dumped into the designated area for trash that day and a bulldozer spreads the trash out while the compactor rolls over it repeatedly for compaction.
- Dirt is then placed over top of the trash to protect it from the elements. This process is repeated over and over again building layer upon layer of trash.
