Dumpster Rental Tips

Dumpster Rental Tip Sub 3

How to reduce costs when renting a roll-off container

As with any purchase, informed shoppers get the best deal. That’s certainly the case when it comes to dumpster rentals. So, here are a few tips that help you become a more informed customer when shopping for the best deal on dumpster rentals:

  1. Call at least two roll-off container rental companies for quotes. This ensures you’re getting the best deal. You can even barter for a better deal by using one quote as leverage against the other.
  2. Avoid overage charges by keeping heavy debris at a minimum (e.g., dirt, concrete, brick, etc.). Likewise, avoid late fees by calling and having the dumpster rental provider pick up the container at the agreed upon date.
  3. When on the fence about which bin size to choose, go with the larger one. The difference in price is minimal compared to the potential of being hit with overage fees later on.

Ask about recycling options. It’s often cheaper for the dumpster company to recycle a load rather than dump it at the landfill. They may pass these savings on to you.

How long is a typical dumpster rental period?

A 7-day rental period is pretty standard, although this can vary by dumpster rental company. Some companies offer 14-day rental periods included in the price while others may charge a fee for each day you have the container.

Most companies allow you to keep the container longer by paying a “late fee,” which typically ranges from $5 to $10 per day. A maximum number of days may apply. You can also have the bin picked up earlier than the agreed upon pick-up date by calling the company and requesting a pick-up.

How to estimate the volume of waste

This is one of the most difficult aspects of choosing a dumpster size. Luckily, rental companies are experienced in handling a wide variety of loads ranging from household junk to roofing shingle debris. They can help you choose the ideal container size for the job.

You can also estimate the amount of debris yourself by physically measuring it and converting it to cubic yards. 1 cubic yard is equal to a 3 ft. x 3 ft. x 3 ft. item or pile of debris. Due to the varying container dimensions, bulky or irregularly shaped items may consume quite a bit of volume in the container. It’s best you discuss this with your dumpster rental provider.

California Dumpster Rental Costs and Rental Information

California dumpster rental prices

The cost of renting a dumpster in California varies greatly depending upon the location (city), supply/demand, size of the container, type of debris, rental duration, and several other factors.

The best way to get an accurate picture of how much a dumpster costs in your area is to contact two or more local rental providers to request a free quote.

Based on several years of data collected by HometownDumpsterRental.com, we have determined the national average cost to rent a dumpster are as follows:

  • 10 yards - $300-$360*
  • 20 yards - $380-$456*
  • 30 yards - $440-$528*
  • 40 yards - $490-$588

*The costs in California may be higher or lower than these averages. The exact cost will vary based on location, type of debris and hauler. Check with local dumpster rental haulers to get an exact quote.

Closer to home, get an idea of what other California residents have paid for their dumpster rental:

  • 10 yard - $350 (Clean-loaded concrete debris)
  • 20 yard - $367 (Household debris)
  • 30 yard - $410 (Household junk)
  • 40 yard - $475 (Construction debris)

*Prices are highly variable depending upon your location and type of debris.

Dumpster costs vary based on the city/metro you reside, as well as the other factors previously mentioned. For example, during the busy dumpster rental months (e.g., spring), containers are in limited supply, so costs may be slightly higher during this time. On the flip side, slow times of the year may net you a better deal on a dumpster.

How to rent a dumpster in four steps

Ensure the dumpster rental process goes smoothly using the simple steps outlined here:

1. Plan ahead – Renting a dumpster is generally not a spur of the moment thing. Determine your project’s disposal needs at least two weeks ahead of time. Call at least a week in advance to book the dumpster, or two week in advance during busy months (spring, summer and fall). That way you can rest assured knowing the dumpster will be there when you need it.

2. Get multiple quotes – Be sure you’re getting the best rate, service and container for your project by getting quotes from multiple rental providers. We recommend at least two or three.

3. Prep for drop-off – Make sure the drop off location has easy access and no obstructions, such as cars, kid’s toys, or even fences (if applicable).

4. Follow the loading guidelines – Avoid the headaches later on and: Don’t over-fill the dumpster, avoid disposing of prohibited items (e.g., hazardous wastes), don’t mix trash in with clean loads (e.g., concrete only), and follow other guidelines given to you by the dumpster rental company.

C&D debris makes up about 29% of the solid waste stream in CA

That’s a big chunk of the waste trucked to landfills each year. The thing is that C&D debris is almost entirely recyclable. Materials like asphalt, concrete, roofing shingles, and lumber can be broken down and recycled into new materials.

If renting a dumpster for a home renovation or roofing project, ask the dumpster rental provider if they recycle construction debris. That way you can source separate debris as necessary.

TIP: This may actually save you money in the end since it’s less expensive for the waste hauler to drop off at a recycling facility compared to the tipping fees at landfills.
