Dumpster Rental Tips

Dumpsters for Rent

Estimating the volume of junk or debris

It’s difficult to estimate the amount of junk or debris you’ll have for a particular project, such as a roofing job or household cleanout. Your best source of information in this case is your dumpster rental company. They have experience in dealing with a wide variety and quantities of waste and debris. They can help you choose the ideal container size with relatively precise accuracy.

If you choose to estimate the amount of debris yourself, you can measure it and convert it to cubic yards. One cubic yard is equal to a 3 ft. x 3 ft. x 3 ft. pile of debris. That’s about the volume of a standard kitchen stove.

Estimating the weight of a load is extremely difficult, and so it’s best to consult your dumpster provider to determine if your load is likely under the weight allowance for a particular container size.

How many days is the rental period?

One week is a standard rental period, although it’s not uncommon to find some dumpster rental companies offering 14-day rentals included in the price. Some may even charge a daily fee for rental, which could end up being a better deal in cases where you only need the container on site for a day or two.

If you need a dumpster for longer than the rental period, you can request it for longer and pay a “late fee” of typically $5 or $10 per day. Many rental companies cap the maximum length of the rental due to inventory issues. To have a debris box picked up prior to the end of the rental period, simply call the company and request a pick-up.

5 common types of dumpsters

Commercial dumpsters – Used for weekly/monthly trash hauling services at businesses. Not for temporary use.

Roll-off containers – Dumpsters you rent for temporary use at home, construction sites or commercial cleanups.

Trailer dumpsters – An alternative to roll-off dumpsters used by some rental providers. It offers the advantage of being on wheels, which decreases the risk of damage to your driveway.

Bag-style containers – “Bagster” and similar type of compact containers ranging from 1 cubic yard to 3 cubic yards, generally.

"Lowboy" dumpsters – Roll-off dumpsters with low sides, ideal for loading heavy materials, such as dirt, concrete or masonry.

Dumpster container sizing information

Roll-off dumpster sizes vary by rental provider, but here are the most common:

  • 10 yard: 12 ft. x 8 ft. x 3.5 ft. (LxWxH)
  • 20 yard: 22 ft. x 8 ft. x 4 ft. (LxWxH)
  • 30 yard: 22 ft. x 8 ft. x 6 ft. (LxWxH)
  • 40 yard: 22 ft. x 8 ft. x 8 ft. (LxWxH)

The container sizes in your area may vary based on availability. If you can’t find the container size you’re looking for, check with a different rental company near you.

Other relatively common dumpster sizes include 8, 12 and 15 yarders. Still other container sizes are also sometimes available. Trailer dumpsters are a roll-off dumpster alternative that work great for a wide range of situations.

The Ohio EPA encourages composting

At least a 25% of the waste landfilled in the U.S. is compostable. This includes yard debris, food waste and paper products. Composting is good for the environment and saves you money in two ways:

  • You don’t have to buy fertilizer. You’re making your own 100% organic fertilizer for the garden, flower beds, indoor plantings, or to add to topsoil.
  • Composting reduces the amount of waste you generate, which may allow you to downsize your curbside garbage container needs and save you a few bucks on your waste hauling bill.

It’s easy to compost at home, and no, it doesn’t smell like rotting garbage if you do it right. It’s a matter of mixing “brown” materials like twigs, dead leaves and clean paper with “green” materials like coffee grounds/filters, fruit/veggie scraps, nut shells and egg shells (no whole eggs).

Mix in a higher ratio of brown materials to avoid a stinky batch of compost. Mix weekly and keep moist with water. That’s all it takes to start reaping the benefits of compost.
