Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle Prior to Renting a Dumpster

When renting a dumpster in Port St. Lucie (or disposing of weekly curbside trash), the city encourages residents to reduce, reuse, and recycle as much as possible to keep recyclable materials from ending up in an unsustainable landfill.  Whether you're cleaning out household debris or remodeling and have construction debris to dispose of, please investigate if any of the materials are recyclable or reusable prior to disposal in the dumpster.

Waste Pro is the contracted waste hauler for residential curbside collection and recycling. Two free bins for recycled goods are supplied to residents who want to help maintain the environment and help "Keep Port St. Lucie Beautiful". To receive your free recycling bins call (772) 595-9390.

As of May 1, 2014 single stream recycling will be in effect for the City of Port St. Lucie, Florida, making recycling that much easier.

Please do NOT dispose of any hazardous waste in a roll off dumpster.   Contact the Public Works Department at (772) 871-5100 for their household hazardous waste drop off day or visit the St. Lucie County Baling and Recycling Facility.

Tips on renting a dumpster in Port St Lucie, FL

Does the waste & debris get recycled?

An increasing number of dumpster rental companies are offering recycling services due the growing number of recycling facilities popping up around the country. A typical materials recovery facility is able to process paper, metals, plastics, concrete, masonry, roofing shingles, amongst other materials.

Ask your dumpster provider if they offer recycling and if so, what’s required to participate. Typically you’ll need to keep recyclables in a separate container, referred to as a “clean load.”

All materials and debris that isn’t recyclable will be dropped off at municipal landfills, construction and demolition (C&D) landfills or waste-to-energy (WTE) plants.

How many days do I get to keep the trash dumpster on site?

One week is a standard rental period, although it’s not uncommon to find some dumpster rental companies that offer 14-day rentals included in the price. Some may even charge a daily fee for rental, which could end up being a better deal in cases where you only need the container on site for a day or two.

If you need a dumpster for longer than the rental period, you can request it for longer and pay a “late fee” of typically $5 or $10 per day. Many rental companies cap the maximum length of the rental due to inventory issues. To have a debris box picked up prior to the end of the rental period, simply call the company and request a pick-up.
