Dumpster Rental Tips

Dumpsters for Rent

Is the waste recycled? If not, where does it go?

Some do and some don’t. In recent years, recycling efforts have picked up drastically and so an increasing number of roll-off rental companies are starting to offer recycling services.

The best way to ensure your debris is recycled is to first ask if it’s offered. If so, you’ll need to keep recyclables in a separate dumpster. For example, concrete debris should go in one dumpster and non-recyclables in another.

Loads that are not recyclable will go to local municipal landfills, C&D landfills or waste-to-energy plants.

Going with a larger dumpster may save you money, here’s how…

It’s very difficult to accurately estimate how much your debris or junk is going to weigh and how much volume it will consume inside a dumpster. While dumpster rental companies are remarkably good at helping you choose the right size dumpster for the job, it’s still just an educated guess.

For this reason, it may be a more cost-effective strategy to go with a slightly larger container than you think you may need. The extra $50 to $100 in rental fees may in fact be less expensive compared to the potential overage charges incurred if you go over the weight limit on a smaller size dumpster. Overage charges generally range from $50 to $100 per ton but can be more than that in some instances.

Going with a bigger container is also cheaper in situations where you rent a bin that’s slightly too small to complete the job and so you end up renting another. For example: You rent a 10-yard container for a home cleanup and it turns out there’s about 15 yards of debris. You may have paid $250 for the rental but now you’ll need to pay an additional $250 to rent a second 10 yard dumpster to complete the job. If you have rented a 20 yard roll-off in the first place for $350-$400, you would’ve saved a substantial amount of money – not to mention time.

California Dumpster Rental Costs and Rental Information

California dumpster rental prices

The cost of renting a dumpster in California varies greatly depending upon the location (city), supply/demand, size of the container, type of debris, rental duration, and several other factors.

The best way to get an accurate picture of how much a dumpster costs in your area is to contact two or more local rental providers to request a free quote.

Based on several years of data collected by HometownDumpsterRental.com, we have determined the national average cost to rent a dumpster are as follows:

  • 10 yards - $300-$360*
  • 20 yards - $380-$456*
  • 30 yards - $440-$528*
  • 40 yards - $490-$588

*The costs in California may be higher or lower than these averages. The exact cost will vary based on location, type of debris and hauler. Check with local dumpster rental haulers to get an exact quote.

Closer to home, get an idea of what other California residents have paid for their dumpster rental:

  • 10 yard - $350 (Clean-loaded concrete debris)
  • 20 yard - $367 (Household debris)
  • 30 yard - $410 (Household junk)
  • 40 yard - $475 (Construction debris)

*Prices are highly variable depending upon your location and type of debris.

Dumpster costs vary based on the city/metro you reside, as well as the other factors previously mentioned. For example, during the busy dumpster rental months (e.g., spring), containers are in limited supply, so costs may be slightly higher during this time. On the flip side, slow times of the year may net you a better deal on a dumpster.

How to rent a dumpster in four steps

Ensure the dumpster rental process goes smoothly using the simple steps outlined here:

1. Plan ahead – Renting a dumpster is generally not a spur of the moment thing. Determine your project’s disposal needs at least two weeks ahead of time. Call at least a week in advance to book the dumpster, or two week in advance during busy months (spring, summer and fall). That way you can rest assured knowing the dumpster will be there when you need it.

2. Get multiple quotes – Be sure you’re getting the best rate, service and container for your project by getting quotes from multiple rental providers. We recommend at least two or three.

3. Prep for drop-off – Make sure the drop off location has easy access and no obstructions, such as cars, kid’s toys, or even fences (if applicable).

4. Follow the loading guidelines – Avoid the headaches later on and: Don’t over-fill the dumpster, avoid disposing of prohibited items (e.g., hazardous wastes), don’t mix trash in with clean loads (e.g., concrete only), and follow other guidelines given to you by the dumpster rental company.

C&D debris makes up about 29% of the solid waste stream in CA

That’s a big chunk of the waste trucked to landfills each year. The thing is that C&D debris is almost entirely recyclable. Materials like asphalt, concrete, roofing shingles, and lumber can be broken down and recycled into new materials.

If renting a dumpster for a home renovation or roofing project, ask the dumpster rental provider if they recycle construction debris. That way you can source separate debris as necessary.

TIP: This may actually save you money in the end since it’s less expensive for the waste hauler to drop off at a recycling facility compared to the tipping fees at landfills.
