Dumpster Rental Tips

Dumpsters for Rent

How to reduce costs when renting a roll-off container

As with any purchase, informed shoppers get the best deal. That’s certainly the case when it comes to dumpster rentals. So, here are a few tips that help you become a more informed customer when shopping for the best deal on dumpster rentals:

  1. Call at least two roll-off container rental companies for quotes. This ensures you’re getting the best deal. You can even barter for a better deal by using one quote as leverage against the other.
  2. Avoid overage charges by keeping heavy debris at a minimum (e.g., dirt, concrete, brick, etc.). Likewise, avoid late fees by calling and having the dumpster rental provider pick up the container at the agreed upon date.
  3. When on the fence about which bin size to choose, go with the larger one. The difference in price is minimal compared to the potential of being hit with overage fees later on.

Ask about recycling options. It’s often cheaper for the dumpster company to recycle a load rather than dump it at the landfill. They may pass these savings on to you.

How long is a typical dumpster rental period?

A 7-day rental period is pretty standard, although this can vary by dumpster rental company. Some companies offer 14-day rental periods included in the price while others may charge a fee for each day you have the container.

Most companies allow you to keep the container longer by paying a “late fee,” which typically ranges from $5 to $10 per day. A maximum number of days may apply. You can also have the bin picked up earlier than the agreed upon pick-up date by calling the company and requesting a pick-up.

How to estimate the volume of waste

This is one of the most difficult aspects of choosing a dumpster size. Luckily, rental companies are experienced in handling a wide variety of loads ranging from household junk to roofing shingle debris. They can help you choose the ideal container size for the job.

You can also estimate the amount of debris yourself by physically measuring it and converting it to cubic yards. 1 cubic yard is equal to a 3 ft. x 3 ft. x 3 ft. item or pile of debris. Due to the varying container dimensions, bulky or irregularly shaped items may consume quite a bit of volume in the container. It’s best you discuss this with your dumpster rental provider.

Disposal and Dumpster Rental Info in Connecticut

Most widely-available roll-off dumpster sizes

Roll-off dumpster sizes vary, but the most common are:

  • 10 yard: 12 ft. x 8 ft. x 3.5 ft. (LxWxH)
  • 20 yard: 22 ft. x 8 ft. x 4 ft. (LxWxH)
  • 30 yard: 22 ft. x 8 ft. x 6 ft. (LxWxH)
  • 40 yard: 22 ft. x 8 ft. x 8 ft. (LxWxH)

The container sizes in your area may vary based on what the dumpster rental company carries, as well as the availability of specific containers. If you can’t find the container size you’re looking for, check with a different rental company near you.

Other relatively common container sizes include 8, 12 and 15 yarders. Still, other container sizes are also sometimes available. Trailer dumpsters are a roll-off dumpster alternative that work great for a wide range of situations.

How’s construction and demolition (C&D) debris disposed of in CT?

The State categorizes C&D debris as a distinct type of bulky waste that has value when recycled. Thus, it promotes proper recycling of C&D whenever possible.

The types of C&D materials that should be recycled include asphalt shingles, gypsum board, concrete, wood and more.

You can contact your local recycling coordinator to find the nearest C&D recycling facility.

“Special wastes” require special rules

Disposing of items, such as tires or asbestos, requires that you obtain a Special Waste Disposal Authorization. This permit costs $660, or $300 for asbestos debris only.

***This fee is waived for homeowners if the waste originated from their house.
