Dumpster Rental Tips

Dumpsters for Rent

How to reduce costs when renting a roll-off container

As with any purchase, informed shoppers get the best deal. That’s certainly the case when it comes to dumpster rentals. So, here are a few tips that help you become a more informed customer when shopping for the best deal on dumpster rentals:

  1. Call at least two roll-off container rental companies for quotes. This ensures you’re getting the best deal. You can even barter for a better deal by using one quote as leverage against the other.
  2. Avoid overage charges by keeping heavy debris at a minimum (e.g., dirt, concrete, brick, etc.). Likewise, avoid late fees by calling and having the dumpster rental provider pick up the container at the agreed upon date.
  3. When on the fence about which bin size to choose, go with the larger one. The difference in price is minimal compared to the potential of being hit with overage fees later on.

Ask about recycling options. It’s often cheaper for the dumpster company to recycle a load rather than dump it at the landfill. They may pass these savings on to you.

How long is a typical dumpster rental period?

A 7-day rental period is pretty standard, although this can vary by dumpster rental company. Some companies offer 14-day rental periods included in the price while others may charge a fee for each day you have the container.

Most companies allow you to keep the container longer by paying a “late fee,” which typically ranges from $5 to $10 per day. A maximum number of days may apply. You can also have the bin picked up earlier than the agreed upon pick-up date by calling the company and requesting a pick-up.

How to estimate the volume of waste

This is one of the most difficult aspects of choosing a dumpster size. Luckily, rental companies are experienced in handling a wide variety of loads ranging from household junk to roofing shingle debris. They can help you choose the ideal container size for the job.

You can also estimate the amount of debris yourself by physically measuring it and converting it to cubic yards. 1 cubic yard is equal to a 3 ft. x 3 ft. x 3 ft. item or pile of debris. Due to the varying container dimensions, bulky or irregularly shaped items may consume quite a bit of volume in the container. It’s best you discuss this with your dumpster rental provider.

Renting a dumpster in Colorado

Average dumpster rental prices in Colorado

The cost of renting a dumpster in Colorado varies greatly depending upon the location (city), supply/demand, size of the container, type of debris, rental duration, and several other factors.

The best way to get an accurate picture of how much a dumpster costs in your area is to contact two or more local rental providers to request a free quote.

Based on several years of data collected by HometownDumpsterRental.com, we have determined the national average cost to rent a dumpster are as follows:

  • 10 yards - $300-$360*
  • 20 yards - $380-$456*
  • 30 yards - $440-$528*
  • 40 yards - $490-$588

*The costs in Colorado may be higher or lower than these averages. The exact cost will vary based on location, type of debris and hauler. Check with local dumpster rental haulers to get an exact quote.

Closer to home, get an idea of what other Colorado residents have paid for their dumpster rental:

  • 10 yard - $265 (bathroom remodel)
  • 20 yard - $309 (yard waste disposal)
  • 30 yard - $400 (construction debris)
  • 40 yard - $420 (construction debris)

Dumpster costs vary based on the city/metro you reside, as well as the other factors previously mentioned. For example, during the busy dumpster rental months (e.g., spring), containers are in limited supply, so costs may be slightly higher during this time. On the flip side, slow times of the year may net you a better deal on a dumpster.

E-waste is banned from Colorado landfills

Computers, printers, computer peripherals, mp3 players, DVD players, TVs, and other electronics are banned from entering Colorado landfills. While this has been the case for businesses and corporations for quite some time, it is now the law for Colorado residents as well.

Senate Bill 12-133 passed in July 2013 made it illegal for residents to dump any sort of e-waste into the trash.

So where can you dispose of e-waste?

The Colorado Department of Public Health suggests using one of the following to find a local e-waste recycler:

Learn more about Colorado’s solid waste rules, regulations and laws

Colorado has a variety of statutes, regulations, and laws governing the disposal and hauling of wastes within the State. It’s important to brush up on these to ensure you don’t violate any laws during your next bulk waste removal, renovation, roofing job or cleanout project.
